Ants/ABC Wednesday

 A is for Ants

I have always been fascinated with ants, and those who have been bitten have a tendency to crush them at sight.  As a child,  I watched ants with curiosity as they bring a grain of sugar, rice, crumbs and what-not to their colony while managing a narrow ledge.  Ants have remarkable communication skills and may have perfected social networking; they have a division of labor, always busy, always on the move.   I wonder if ants ever take a vacation.

Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae with an estimated 22,000 species.

Wishing for better lens to capture the beauty of these creatures.

I agree they're fascinating to watch; however, it's not nice when you see them crawling on your dining room wall...which has happened to me!

Yes ants really are fascinating but NOT in my house.
We have been invaded these last two weeks as the temps have been in the low 30F. in the early mornings and then the rain has driven them inside.
Ugh..not happy.

Lovely macros. Never have looked at ants so closely ever since my brother used to catch them and put them in a match box!

Lovely photos, but just coincidentally someone sent me an email a few minutes ago to tell me that Nutrasweet was first created as ant poison till they found out it would make more money as a sweetener. Hmmmm....

I love ants, too! Used to watch them in the summer as they toiled around the sand margins of our patio. My husband says the only ants he doesn't like are fire ants, because he was once "attacked" by same, and I'll take his word for that. What would gardens do without ants and worms, tilling the soil? Great. Peace, Amy
