Mango/Mellow Yellow Monday

A fabulous variety of mango I got from ECJ Farms.  This mango is about the size of a baby's head, and weighs more than a kilo.  And it tastes absolutely great--it doesn't have the "antibiotic" flavor and fiber of an apple mango!  ECJ Farms grow this variety in Dipolog.  I kept coming back for more until ECJ Farms' store in Tiendesitas ran out of stock.:p

Kilawin na Isaw

Another one of  my cousin Mark's pulutan specialties---Kilawin na Isaw (pork intestines).  An uncle butchered a pig during a family reunion, and Mark was assigned to take care of the pulutan.  I never had Kilawin na Isaw in a long, long time.  For obvious reasons, I prefer not to eat this dish when I don't know who prepared it.  What my brother said years ago is forever etched in my mind---baka galing sa Araneta Avenue yan! (LOL)

This was a hit to all beer drinkers in the family including yours truly.  My mom and an aunt needed to be reminded of their uric acid levels.

For the adventurous, here's how Mark prepared this kilawin:
  • Pork large intestines were cleaned with lime and salt to eliminate odor and thoroughly washed
  • Then boiled in ginger and lemongrass for 10-15 minutes, drained and washed in cold water
  • Boiled again with ginger, salt and pepper until pork intestines were tender
  • Sliced (bite-size) and mixed with onions, ginger, unripe tomatoes, coconut cream and coconut vinegar (black beans, pineapple chunks are optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Hot chili peppers (optional)
  • Garnished with crushed salted peanuts and raisins (adding raisins was my idea :p)
  • Chilled
If you're not into pork intestines, you can use pig's ears and cheeks.:p

Jesse James Sampler

A favorite appetizer at Texas Roadhouse Grill---Jesse James Sampler.  A medley of mildly spiced buffalo wings, hand-battered fish fillet and jack cheese with 3 sauces for dipping.  This was great with ice cold Tanduay Ice.

Mellow Yellow Monday: Appetizer

A popular Filipino appetizer and side dish for grilled fish or grilled pork---diced tomatoes, green mango and white onion relish topped with sweet & spicy shrimp paste.  Forget about spoon and fork...with this, eating with your bare hands is more exciting.:p

Mellow Yellow Monday: Nachos with cheese

Ground beef nachos with pico de gallo, sour cream and cheese.  A perfect snack after a gut-busting Noche Buena feast.

Kinilaw na Dilis

My cousin Mark's specialty--kinilaw na dilis (anchovies salad).  The raw, deboned anchovies were marinated in coconut vinegar for a few minutes then lightly squeezed to take excess vinegar.  Then the fillet was tossed in coconut milk, onions, ginger, kamias, tomatoes, black beans and crushed peanuts.  Spicy chili is optional.  This was a scrumptious appetizer over bottles of beer and kwentong barbero with my cousins.

Drunken Shrimps

Drunken shrimps or Nilasing na Hipon---a perfect match to an ice cold Tanduay Ice.  The shrimps were cooked in beer, battered and deep-fried, and served with garlic-vinegar dip.  This was at a girls' night out in Masas-Greenbelt 2.

Thai appetizer

I was back at Jatujak recently with two girlfriends.  We got this appetizer combo of fried and fresh spring rolls and shrimp cakes.  These gave our taste buds a kick.

Killing Me Softly

Foodies are continuously finding ways of reinventing dishes.  I call this salad "Killing Me Softly"...it's not new, really.  This is your humble Ensaladang Talong (eggplant salad) with chicharon (pork cracklings) on top.  It's a vegetable dish---pretend the crunchy chicharon is just a figment of your imagination.:p

Hungarian sausage

@ mirandablue
I don't know much about Hungarian food.  In fact, I've never been to a Hungarian restaurant (is there one around here?).  But I love Hungarian sausage.  I get a kick from the combination of spices.  My next foodie project would be---to find a Hungarian resto in the metro.  Wanna join me?

Yaku @ The Podium

@ mirandablue
Tazukuri - sweet and spicy fried dilis
U and I were at The Podium one Sunday night and we noticed Yaku, a Japanese grill on level 3.  We haven't eaten here before so we decided to try them out.

While waiting for our order, we were served tazukuri for appetizer.  I love tazukuri--I even asked for another serving to take home, and it was on the house.:p We had a heavy late afternoon snack and not really hungry. We  had Gyuniko no Yasaimaki and Spicy Shake Maki.  Gyuniko no Yasaimaki is a yakimono dish--the beef was grilled, not raw.  These were great with beer.:p

Agave sampler

@ mirandablue
A bit of everything in one plate.  Shared this appetizer sampler with two friends at Agave Mexican Cantina in Bonifacio High Street. This is a selection of Agave's popular appetizers--Yucatan chicken skewers, beef taquitos, fresh mushroom empanaditas, crab & shrimp chile rellenos, quesadillas and Mexican and lime-cilantro rice.  Served with hacienda ranch dip, chips and salsa.

Grissini di Pizza

@ mirandablue
Grissini di Pizza---freshly-baked garlic bread sticks with special cheese dip.  It's been a long while since I dined at Piadina in Greenbelt.  Met two friends here in late February, and the food was as good as I remembered.  We munched on these bread sticks while waiting for the main course.

Food Quote: Italian Sausage

Homemade Italian Sausages from Amici

"If you never try a new thing, how can you tell what it's like? It's men/women such as you that hamper the world's progress. Think of the man who first tried German sausage!"

Food Quote: Jelly Fish Salad

@ mirandablue

Cold Jelly Fish  Salad with Century Egg and Sesame Seeds

"I've long believed that good food, good eating, is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."
