This genus was named after the human clitoris, for the flowers bear a resemblance to female pudenda. Originally the first described species of the genus was given the name Flos clitoridis ternatensibus in 1678 by Rumpf, a German-born botanist. It was regarded as appropriately named by Johann Philipp Breyne in 1747. Many vernacular names of these flowers in different languages are similarly based on references to a woman's sexual organ. I've seen this flowering vine along the sea shores since I was kid but didn't know its name. This photo was taken at the beach in Ilocos Norte in early September.

Beautiful pink flowers. On a vine growing with other flowers must be really nice to see!

Gorgeous pink flowers! I love the way the bud seems to be purple, and then fades into the pink!
I think that one of the fun parts about taking photos of all these beutiful flowers is learning all their names, after so many years of just seeing them!
Superb capture
:)
Bhupesh
It might not be the Clitoria ternatea, it doesn't look like Centrosema pubescense either, but the leaf morphology resembles a dessert vine which i forgot the name at the moment. May i know where you see this plant? Is it a vine, what area is it growing; e.g. sandy, shady, domesticated, etc. thank you.
The colour is amazing and this is a terrific shot.
Glorious shots of this beautiful vine. It must be wonderful to see them growing. There appear to be many buds so that there are always flowers.
