White Frangipani

White Frangipani, Plumeria obtusa, Plumeria pudica, Kalachuchi, Everlasting Love

Frangipanis originate from South America and  there are some 300 species.  There is a theory that Catholic missionary priests spread frangipanis around the world as they traveled.  The reason why different species are popular and common throughout the Philippines and Thailand, and rare in Vietnam and China.   Locally known as kalachuchi, the flowers give off a strong perfume at night to attract hawk moths that pollinate the flowers.  This flowering tree loves warm climates and can survive months of hot weather without water.  I associate the heady scent of frangipani with death as the flowers were popularly used as sympathy flowers and  wreaths at funerals when I was growing up.

We do not remember days, we remember moments.

White frangipanni was used in Chinese funeral donkey years ago, because they were plentiful and readily available . We used to call it the Chinese Funeral flowers. Now Chrysanthemums are used instead.

Beautiful all white flowers...the pink ones seem to be more common in Australia...but not in Canberra, there are none at all because it is too cold!

Maybe we associated it with funerals, because these are the always present flowers for us, handy to use when flower shops are not yet present. But in Hawaii they have commercial plantations of that for making into leis. By the way i saw your comment on Denise's blue Vanda orchid. We have lots of them here,it is one of the grandkids of our very own Vanda sanderiana. You should visit orchid shows here, the next one by the Philippine Orchid society is in February at the Quezon Memorial Center, and a conference to be held at BSWM from (i think) Feb 24. You will see lots of new orchid hybrids and native ones.

Beautiful flower photos. We have the creamy ones, and my mother had them as her wedding bouquet, and I occasionally see the cerise one, beautiful fragrances.
